Octopus Energy - Smart Meter Installation

I'm a fan of Octopus Energy as they always seem to be looking out to reduce our bills whenever they can.

However, they have been on my case to fit a Smart Meter because my present ones are apparently out of certification. Then just replace them with ones that are certified. No, they want me to have a Smart Meter.

My meters are accessible for readings and I'm physically and mentally able to provide the numbers every month. Which I do.

Furthermore, I've owned my solar panels for over 10 years, and with the aid of a digital display, I know when to economically put on appliances like dishwasher, kettle, oven, slow cooker and washing machine etc.

Anyway, I succumbed and an appoint was made. The Friday before the Monday Public Holiday in May, between 1pm and 5pm. The fixtures would take about an hour each.

I made special arrangements to be at home, someone needed to be there who was over 18yrs old, as required and duly waited the arrival of the engineers.

I waited, and waited and waited even more. No-one appeared. Considering the time needed for fixing I phoned Customer Services just before 4pm. No definitive information about where the crew were was available but I was probably the next call. No I wasn't.

I felt rather let down to say the least. I'd wasted a whole afternoon as well as the preparation time and now there was a need to rearrange, without confidence in the engineers actually turning up. A feeling I relayed to Octopus. To their credit they responded with an apology and credited some money to my account.

I then made a case that while I appreciated their apology and compensation I felt the latter did not reflect my inconvenience due to them wasting so much of my time for something I don't really want anyway.

I'm waiting their reply. Come back later for more news.

What do you think about Smart Meters? I've received mixed reports from users so I'm still leaning towards a, No, because of their lack of reliability and I have solar panels with digital output display.

Part 2

Just successfully concluded discussions with delightful Customer Service agents who have increased the compensation amount and I will phone them to arrange another time and date for the fitting. We'll done Octopus Energy!
